๐ธ 2nd Annual African Palliative Care Photography Competition
The African Palliative Care Association (APCA) is pleased to announce the Second Annual Photography Competition, an initiative funded by the True Colours Trust (TCT). This competition seeks to visually showcase what quality palliative care for adults and children looks like across diverse African contexts.
Individuals and organizations involved in palliative care are invited to document powerful and compassionate moments of care provision in homes, health facilities, and community settings.
Winning entries will be featured during the APCA Conference in September 2025, displayed on the APCA website, and promoted across partner platformsโwith full credit to the photographer and/or organization.
๐ฅ Eligibility
Submissions are invited from:
- Individuals and organizations involved in palliative care
- Current and former recipients of APCA/TCT small grants
- Registered members of APCA
Recommended: We encourage all participants to complete the free online course on best practices in ethical photography, available via the APCA Resource Center.
๐ฅ Submission Process
Participants must:
- Download and complete the official competition entry form here.
- Submit a maximum of four (4) high-resolution photographs (each between 1MB and 10MB).
- Provide a brief narrative (max 100 words per photo) outlining the context, date, activity, and perceived impact.

๐ Submission Guidelines
- Each photo must be between 1MB and 10MB in size.
- Photos must be original and not previously awarded in any other competition.
- Descriptions must include location, context, date, and nature of the activity.
- Screenshots and collages will not be accepted.
- A maximum of four entries per participant is allowed.
- All images must respect the dignity and privacy of individuals depicted.
- A completed and signed consent form must accompany each photo submission where identifiable individuals are present.
- APCA and TCT reserve the right to remove or reject submissions for any reason.
๐ฅ Equipment Support
Individuals or employees of eligible organizations may apply for a small grant of up to GBP 60 to support the purchase of a low-cost camera for participation in this competition.

๐งโโ๏ธ Judging Criteria
Entries will be reviewed by a distinguished panel comprising palliative care professionals, photography experts, and national palliative care leaders from across Africa. Judging will be based on:
- Technical excellence
- Relevance to the theme
- Originality and creativity
- Diversity of perspectives
The panelโs decision is final. No correspondence will be entered into regarding the judging process or results.

- 4th Prize: ยฃ100
- 5th Prize: ยฃ50
๐ Winning photographs will be exhibited at the APCA Conference and promoted through various communication platforms.
๐ Terms and Conditions
- Winners and commended participants may be requested to participate in publicity activities, and their names and images may be published by APCA and/or TCT.
- Proper credit will be attributed to the photographer and/or their organization whenever submitted images are used.
- The competition is open to all, except individuals under 18 and those involved in organizing or judging the competition, including their immediate families.
- All entries will be anonymized during the judging process to ensure impartiality.
- For photographs involving minors, written consent from a parent or legal guardian must be obtained and submitted.
๐ธ Usage Rights
By entering the competition, participants grant APCA a non-exclusive, royalty-free, and irrevocable license to use, reproduce, enlarge, publish, or display submitted images in any media, for purposes aligned with APCAโs mission. Full credit will be given to photographers.
๐ Data Protection
Participant information will be securely stored by APCA and used solely for purposes related to the photography competition and relevant organizational communications.
โ๏ธ Legal Disclaimer and Indemnity
APCA shall not be held liable for any loss, damage, injury, or expense incurred through participation in the competition or use of prizes. By submitting an entry, participants agree to indemnify APCA against any claims, including those related to intellectual property rights or data protection violations.
โ Entrant Declarations
Each participant affirms that:
- They are the sole creator and rightful owner of the images submitted.
- They have obtained informed consent from all identifiable individuals featured in the photos (or from their parent/guardian if under 18).
- All submissions uphold human dignity and comply with ethical standards.
- Accurate contextual information accompanies each image.
- They accept APCAโs right to disqualify or refuse any entry at its discretion.
