For palliative care to reach everyone who needs it, both APCA as an organisation and palliative care as a discipline must be built on a sustainable foundation. APCA works to strengthen its own institutional capacity while also supporting the long-term growth of palliative care associations and services across Africa.
Our sustainability work includes:
- Strengthening the governance, membership and institutional capacity of APCA and national palliative care associations
- Mobilising diverse and sustainable funding to support palliative care programmes across the region
- Supporting the establishment and growth of new national palliative care associations
- Building strategic partnerships with governments, donors and regional bodies
- Strengthening leadership succession and long-term institutional planning
Between 2011 and 2020, APCA held three triennial general assemblies and 40 board meetings, secured 52 grants from 23 donors totalling more than $14 million, and supported the establishment of four new national palliative care associations in Botswana, Cameroon, Rwanda and Senegal.
Through its 2020-2030 Strategic Plan, APCA continues to invest in the sustainability of the organisation and of palliative care as a discipline, ensuring strong institutions, diverse funding and capable leadership carry this work forward across Africa.
