The African Palliative Care Association (APCA) has launched Best Care for the Dying Person, a 12-session education programme for health and care professionals who support people in the last days and hours of life.
The programme is built on the International Collaborative for Best Care for the Dying Person's 10 Key Principles and the associated 10/40 Model for Best Care for the Dying Person. It brings globally recognised standards of end-of-life care to practitioners across Africa.
Why This Programme Matters
Every person deserves to die with dignity, comfort and compassion, and the people close to them deserve support too. The final days and hours of life are among the most sensitive moments in care. Doing this well takes more than good intentions. It takes knowledge, confidence and practical skill.
The programme aims to strengthen participants' ability to deliver care that is compassionate, individualised, culturally appropriate and evidence-informed. It covers both the dying person and those important to them.
What Participants Will Gain
The programme is structured around five commitments:
- Learn from global best practice in care for the dying person.
- Build confidence and practical skills for real clinical and care settings.
- Deliver compassionate care tailored to each individual.
- Respect culture and community in every care decision.
- Support patients and their loved ones through the end of life.
Certification
Participants who complete the programme will receive a certificate.
