Professor Olaitan Soyannwo, Nigeria 
My Palliative Care Journey: Education and Clinical Care
 

Professor Olaitan Soyannwo is a Professor of Anaesthesia and Consultant in Anaesthesia, Pain and Palliative Care. She is the cofounder and President of the Centre for Palliative Care Nigeria (CPCN). She is active in advocating for effective pain management and opioid availability in developing countries. 

Professor Soyannwo has been instrumental in developing pain management and palliative care in Nigeria and other countries as founder of the Society for the Study of Pain Nigeria (SSPN) and as a board member of the African Palliative Care Association (APCA) and the Hospice and Palliative Care Association, Nigeria (HPCAN). She has spent much of her career focused on training and developing education in pain and palliative care. The collaboration between her organization, CPCN, and the University College Hospital, Ibadan has resulted in the establishment of the first Department of Palliative Care with service, training and research components in federal government teaching hospitals across Nigeria. 

Professor Soyannwo has served as the Head of Department of Anaesthesia at University College Hospital, Ibadan and as the Dean of Clinical Sciences at the University of Ibadan College of Medicine. In addition, she is a past council member of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), West African College of Surgeons and Nigerian Academy of Science. 

She has served on several national and international committees, including the Nigerian Cancer Consultative Committee, World Health Organization, Institute of Medicine of the National Academies PEPFAR Implementation Committee and American Society of Clinical Oncology. She is a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Medicine and currently serves on the Advisory Council of Global Partners in Care (GPIC).
