Ms Fatia Kiyange, Uganda
Advocacy lessons from other fields of health and human rights

Ms Kiyange, the executive director of CEHURD, has more than 20 years of work experience in the health and social welfare sectors. At CEHURD she continues to spearhead access to social justice in health and human rights within health systems, with the ultimate goal of realizing the right to health for all people, especially those furthest behind. For more than 15 years before joining CEHURD, Ms Kiyange held management and leadership positions in the field of hospice and palliative care at the national, regional, and global level with institutions that include the African Palliative Care Association (APCA) and Hospice Africa Uganda.

She currently serves on several governance boards including the Uganda Cancer Institute; Kawempe Home Care; Global Partners in Care; Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights Alliance, Uganda and Regional Network for Equity in Health in East and Southern Africa (EQUINET). She has previously served on the boards of the Palliative Care Association of Uganda; International Children’s Palliative Care Network and the National Association of Social Workers of Uganda.

Ms Kiyange holds a Master of Public Health from University College Cork, Ireland, and a post-graduate certificate in health protection with the same university. She also holds a master’s degree in social sector planning and management from Makerere University, Kampala and a Bachelor of Arts in social work and social administration of the same university.
