Building a business case for palliative care within Universal Health Coverage for low and middle income countries - what is the evidence?
Jane Bates is a medical doctor who has lived for twenty years in Malawi where she developed clinical, teaching, research, and mentorship platforms for palliative care. Dr Bates has published widely from her background of clinical and teaching practice. In 2013 she authored “Inspiring Hope”– a handbook for churches caring for patients and families with palliative care needs.
Originally trained as a family physician in the UK, she recently gained her PhD in global health from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, using a novel mixed methods approach to explore household poverty and wellbeing for patients and families affected by advanced cancer. Her research findings were published in Lancet Global Health.
Dr Bates is a member of the African Palliative Care Research Network, Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences in Blantyre, Malawi, and Honorary Lecturer at King’s College London. She is currently based in Sheffield, UK.
